Phương cách đơn giản để giúp ngăn chận cúm heo - 4 tháng 11, 2009

Với 1 phần 3 dân số thế giới được dự kiến sẽ lây nhiễm khuẩn cúm heo, Cơ quan Kiểm tra Kỹ thuật ở Đức (TUV) đã khuyến khích người dân uống ít nhất 2 lít nước mỗi ngày để tăng cường hệ miễn nhiễm.

TUV còn đưa ra ý kiến là lối dinh dưỡng dồi dào sinh tố và khoáng chất và đi bộ nhiều để gia tăng lưu lượng. Mặc y phục ấm và tắm nước ấm cũng có thể gia tăng lưu lượng và xây dựng khả năng miễn nhiễm. Lưu ý cơ bản trong việc duy trì vệ sinh tốt qua các phương cách như rửa tay thường xuyên cũng được khuyến khích.

Trong khi đó, cúm heo đã lan tràn nhanh chóng khắp Ukraine, với 67 tử vong được báo cáo cho đến nay liên quan đến các vấn đề hô hấp nghiêm trọng. Quốc gia đã khẩn cấp yêu cầu thuốc men và dụng cụ y khoa cho việc điều trị, khi nói rằng 8.000 người cần được đưa vào bệnh viện hay điều trị tại bệnh viện. Thêm nữa, chính phủ ra lệnh đóng cửa trường học và rạp chiếu phim trong 3 tuần để ngăn chận sự lây nhiễm của chứng bệnh.

Các quốc gia khác có tường trình về tử vong, từ em bé đến người già, bao gồm Syria, Ai Cập, Trung quốc, Kuwait, Thổ Nhĩ Kỳ, A Phú Hãn, Thụy Điển, Ý, Anh quốc và Jordan. Cúm heo gia tăng cảnh báo trong nhiều vùng - 6 tháng 11, 2009

Các viên chức y tế ở Ukraine đã tuyên bố số tử vong gia tăng cao hơn 90 người trong các tuần lễ vừa qua trong đó một số người nói rằng đó có thể là kết quả của một biến thái của cúm heo. Chính phủ yêu cầu cộng đồng quốc tế trợ giúp trong sự thiếu hụt tiếp liệu cơ bản và dụng cụ y khoa. Azerbaijan đang gửi 20 tấn trợ cấp nhân đạo, trong khi các quốc gia lân cận như Ba Lan, Hung Gia Lợi và Romania chuẩn bị cho khả năng phát tán của khuẩn đến quốc gia họ.

Trong khi đó, với số ca cúm heo lan truyền nhanh chóng ở Nam Hàn và 45 người mất mạng, các viên chức đã tuyên bố mức độ cao nhất cảnh báo đỏ, từ đó cho phép các viên chức hạn chế việc du hành và hủy bỏ các sinh hoạt công cộng nhanh hơn trong khi vận động để chống cúm.

Cúm heo hiện nay là vi khuẩn cúm hàng đầu trên thế giới - 8 tháng 11, 2009

Tổ chức Y tế Quốc tế (WHO) tuyên bố rằng vi khuẩn cúm heo H1N1 hiện nay là vi khuẩn cúm thông thường nhất trong loài người. Tuy nhiên, không giống như cúm mùa, mức độ hoạt động của cúm heo không chỉ cao vào mùa đông mà cũng vào những tháng hè, với con người trẻ hơn 65 tuổi đặc biệt dễ bị nhiễm.

Mặc dù các ca cúm heo trên quốc tế có quá nhiều để đếm chính xác, có chiều hướng đáng lo ngại là các ca cúm heo tăng gia ở Bắc Mỹ, Âu châu, và vài phần ở Á châu. Đặc biệt quan tâm là ở Ukraine, nơi đó 95 người đã chết nội trong giai đoạn 2 tuần lễ, và ít nhất 470.000 ca được tường trình là chịu đựng chứng khó khăn hô hấp. WHO tuyên bố rằng bùng phát này rất có thể do vi khuẩn cúm heo loại phụ nhưng biến đổi thành hình thể độc hại hơn, WHO nói rằng các vùng khác trên bắc bán cầu vào mùa đông này có thể kinh nghiệm bộc phát tương tự. WHO cũng đã lập tức kêu gọi giám sát những nhân công và thú vật ở trại nuôi thú sau khi nhiều ca cúm heo hơn được phát giác trong đàn heo ở Hồng Kông, Trung Quốc, Formosa (Đài Loan) và Indiana, Hoa Kỳ.

Cơ quan WHO tuyên bố: “Khi con người nhiễm bệnh trở nên gia tăng và lan rộng, sự truyền vi khuẩn từ người sang heo rất có thể xảy ra với mức độ thường xuyên lớn lao hơn... có tiềm năng gây ra các vi khuẩn cúm mới được sinh sản trong thú vật khác hơn là heo.” Thật vậy, cúm heo hiện nay đã được phát giác trong gà tây ở Chí Lợi và các thú vật nuôi trong nhà, kể cả chồn sương và mèo ở Hoa Kỳ.

Cộng đồng bị dịch MRSA đang tăng gia về số tử vong - 10 tháng 11, 2009

Những nhà nghiên cứu tại Đại học Loyola ở Illinois, Hoa Kỳ khám phá một sự xuất hiện đang lên của vi khuẩn kháng methicillin tên là Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) trên khắp quốc gia, nhất là trong những tháng mùa hạ vừa qua.

Dược lý gia Tiến sĩ Carol Moore giải thích rằng MRSA đi vào cơ thể qua da, và số ca gia tăng vào mùa hạ có thể được giải thích bởi lý do là con người mặc ít quần áo bảo vệ hơn.

Cộng đồng bị nạn dịch MRSA, gây ra những vết lở loét đau đớn và gây tử vong cho khoảng 10% số người bị nhiễm, được liên kết với nông trại chăn nuôi thú. Gần đây nhất, nghiên cứu Hoa Kỳ tìm thấy chuỗi vi khuẩn mới MRSA 5 lần dễ chết người hơn là những chuỗi khác được biết đến, giết 50% nạn nhân trong vòng 30 ngày. Chuỗi vi khuẩn này cũng kháng lại mạnh mẽ hơn đối với một trụ sinh hiệu lực mà đã từng hữu hiệu chữa trị MRSA. Trong khi đó, bệnh cúm heo truyền từ thú vật sang người tiếp tục gây họa khắp toàn cầu.

Những ca cúm heo đã từ lâu được nói rằng lên tới hàng triệu tại các quốc gia như là Hoa Kỳ, mặc dù tổng số toàn cầu quá cao để được biết rõ. Trung tâm Kiểm soát và Phòng ngừa Bệnh ở Âu Châu tuyên bố tổng số tử vong chính thức lên đến 6.349 ca. Tại Âu Châu, 37 người chết được tường trình nội 24 giờ đồng hồ qua, và ở Ukraine, trong vòng vài tuần rồi đã thấy bộc phát tăng cao rất nhanh, đem số tử vong lên tới 155.

Nhiều quốc gia báo cáo về những tử vong mới vì cúm heo, với số đếm ghi nhận gần đây tăng lên 2 người ở Palestine, 6 ở Bangladesh, 24 ở Kuwait, 27 ở Thổ Nhĩ Kỳ, 39 ở Âu Lạc (Việt Nam), 48 ở Nam Hàn, và 502 ở Ấn Độ.

80.000 tử vong vì cúm heo được tiên đoán ở Âu Châu. - 12 tháng 11, 2009

Theo lời Trung tâm Âu Châu về Phòng ngừa và Kiểm soát Bệnh tật (ECDC), số tử vong chính thức vì cúm heo hiện thời là 6.592, một con số được định giá hoàn toàn thấp, vì có mâu thuẫn rộng lớn trong việc tiếp cận y tế và cơ sở thử nghiệm giữa các quốc gia khác nhau.

ECDC đã từ lâu ngừng đếm tổng số người nhiễm bệnh cúm heo cũng vì cùng lý do đó. Hơn nữa, các viên chức từ cơ quan này tuyên bố rằng có nhiều tới 40.000 người riêng tại Âu Châu có thể chết vì cúm heo trong mùa đông này, với thêm 40.000 tử vong nữa từ những sóng cúm mùa theo sau đó. Khi đó, con số người bị nhiễm cúm heo ở Ukraine bùng phát hầu như qua đêm, lên đến 1,3 triệu người nội trong vài tuần.

Thiếu niên Hoa Kỳ nhập viện vì rối loạn thần kinh sau khi chích ngừa cúm heo.

Jordan McFarland, lực sĩ trẻ 14 tuổi từ tiểu bang Virginia, Hoa Kỳ phát sinh đau đầu khủng khiếp, bắp thịt co giật, và chân bị yếu, theo sau việc chích thuốc ngừa cúm heo. Sau khi nhập viện, em được chẩn đoán với triệu chứng Guillain-Barré. Theo lời Các Trung tâm Kiểm soát và Phòng ngừa Bệnh tật Hoa Kỳ, chứng rối loạn tâm thần hiếm có này là giống như một triệu chứng đã hiển lộ vào năm 1976 ở Hoa Kỳ với chương trình chích thuốc ngừa cúm heo, dẫn đến một số tử vong và gây ảnh hưởng suy nhược thần kinh như là bại liệt cho những ai sống sót.

Tuần này, rất nhiều trẻ em tại Nữu Ước, Hoa Kỳ được điều trị ở bệnh viện sau khi phát sinh nhức đầu và buồn nôn theo sau việc chích ngừa cúm heo, nhưng sau đó xuất viện. Tuy nhiên, khi số tử vong vì cúm heo tại Âu Châu tăng gấp đôi hầu như mỗi tuần trong tháng vừa qua, từ 12 đến 24 rồi đến trên 40, và giờ là hơn 80 tử vong mỗi tuần, thì viên chức thuộc Trung tâm Âu Châu Kiểm soát và Phòng ngừa Bệnh tật (ECDC) tuyên bố rằng: “Chúng ta đang bước vào giai đoạn cúm gia tốc trên toàn cầu.”

Số lượng tử vong tiếp tục lan tràn trên toàn cầu, với Ấn Độ xác nhận 514 người chết, 45 được báo cáo ở Do Thái, 239 người chết ở Ukraine, 58 ở Ba Tư, 36 ở Trung Hoa, 16 ở Nga sô, 40 ở Thổ Nhĩ Kỳ, và 40 ở Âu Lạc (Việt Nam), là giữa các quốc gia khác. Đáng lo ngại là ở Hoa Kỳ, nơi đó số tử vong được ước lượng khoảng 1.000, mà một tin mới nhất cho rằng con số tử vong sẽ là hơn 4.000 và có thể lên cao tới 6.000. Thuốc chủng cúm heo tiếp tục gây sợ hãi.

Nỗ lực chủng ngừa khắp toàn cầu được ghi nhận bởi nhiều trường hợp có phản ứng tai hại đối với thuốc chủng, khi nhiều người vẫn không thấy an toàn do thiếu thử nghiệm, hóa chất được coi là chất độc, và sự kiện là thuốc chủng tiêu biểu được chế tạo dùng trứng sản xuất hàng loạt từ việc đối xử vô nhân đạo đối với gà.

Thêm nữa, một số lượng nhân viên không được biết tại bệnh viện Biên giới Dịch vụ Y t,ế Quốc gia (NHS) ở Tô Cách Lan Anh quốc gặp phản ứng tai hại sau khi được chủng ngừa cúm thường trong mùa và cúm heo đồng thời. Và ở Trung quốc, ít nhất 15 người có phản ứng khủng hoảng nghiêm trọng đối với thuốc chủng.

Số tử vong chính thức trên toàn cầu được báo cáo là 6.768. Tổng số thật sự của cả số tử vong cúm heo và số ca cúm heo được coi là quá nhiều để kiểm tính chính xác. Một người đàn ông 55 tuổi ở Thuringia, Đức quốc chết trong vài giờ sau khi được chích thuốc ngừa cúm heo, gây nên quan tâm y tế về thuốc chích ngừa.

Thêm vào đó, hai người Đức khác trải qua cơn sốc dị ứng toàn thân có thể chết người sau khi chích thuốc ngừa, và năm người được báo cáo rằng đã mất mạng ở Thụy Điển sau khi chích ngừa cúm heo. Điều tra bởi những giới chức y tế được thực hiện tại cả 2 quốc gia này để ấn định xem tử vong có liên kết đến thuốc ngừa không.

Trong khi đó, một số rất nhiều người chọn hoàn toàn không muốn nhận chích thuốc ngừa cúm heo vì lo ngại về sự an toàn, trong khi những người khác từ chối vì lý do nhân đạo, nêu lên việc vô nhân đạo vì dùng trứng lấy từ gà được gây giống và nuôi trong tình trạng dơ bẩn và tàn nhẫn, hoặc từ những thận của khỉ xanh Phi Châu.

Tử vong cúm heo tiếp tục gia tăng không ngừng.

Theo Trung tâm Phòng và Kiểm soát Bệnh Âu châu (ECDC), cúm heo lấy mạng 7.296 người cho đến nay trên toàn thế giới. Tuy nhiên, con số này chỉ dựa trên báo cáo chính thức, trong khi con số thật sự được biết ít nhất là hàng ngàn ca cao hơn. Cũng thế, toàn thể dân số bị lây nhiễm là hàng triệu nhiều hơn kiểm tính được báo cáo từ chính phủ.

Trong vài tuần ngắn ngủi, Ukraine đã đi từ báo cáo cúm heo đầu tiên lên đến hơn 1,4 triệu bệnh nhân bị cúm và các triệu chứng hô hấp cấp tính, cùng với 344 người mất mạng và hơn 78.000 người vào bệnh viện. Mặc dù việc đánh giá tiếp tục,Tổ chức Y tế Thế giới (WHO) đã nói rằng phần nhiều các ca là cúm heo.

Các quốc gia khác cũng cho thấy tử vong cúm heo gia tăng, bao gồm Pháp với thêm 11 tử vong kể từ ngày 10 tháng 11, và 38 người mất mạng ở Gia Nã Đại chỉ trong vòng thời kỳ 6 ngày với tổng số 235 tử vong. Dựa theo Trung tâm Phòng ngừa và Kiểm soát Bệnh tật Âu Châu, nội trong giai đoạn một ngày tường trình, số tử vong vì cúm heo được ghi nhận trên toàn cầu nhảy vọt lên 135 mạng người với tổng số tử vong là 7.431. Cùng một lúc, số đếm chính thức cho cả ca tử vong lẫn tổng số nhiễm bệnh là quá thấp so với sự kiện thật sự xảy ra, mà đã không được báo cáo qua một thời gian khá lâu. Chẳng hạn, gần đây có thông báo rằng kể từ tháng 8, 2009, gần 2 triệu người bị nhiễm bệnh với cúm heo, chỉ riêng tại Pháp.

Trong khi đó, các nghiên cứu gia ở Na Uy nhận diện vi khuẩn cúm heo biến đổi trong ba bệnh nhân, hai trong đó đã từ trần, và bệnh nhân thứ ba vẫn còn ốm trầm trọng. Các viên chức y tế Anh quốc cũng lo ngại về hình thể vi khuẩn kháng trụ sinh Tamiflu mà dường như đang truyền từ người sang người giữa các bệnh nhân ốm nặng tại bệnh viện ở Wales, Anh. Cúm gà tái xuất gây thêm hoang mang về sự phối hợp với cúm heo

Với các ca khuẩn cúm gà mới nổi lên ở Ai Cập, Nam Dương, Thái Lan và Âu Lạc (Việt Nam), Tổ chức Y tế Thế giới (WHO) đã cảnh báo khả năng tăng trưởng của cúm heo từ gia cầm, khi nói rằng người tiếp xúc trực tiếp với chim muông đang gặp nhiều nguy hiểm nhất. Văn phòng của WHO ở Manila, Phi Luật Tân tuyên bố họ cũng quan sát cẩn thận về tình trạng phối hợp có thể xảy ra của cúm heo và cúm gà.

Các chuyên gia lo lắng rằng một phối hợp như thế có thể mang lại dòng khuẩn mới hung dữ và gây chết người. Giáo sư Niels Becker, Giám đốc của Trung tâm Dịch tễ học và Y tế Dân cư Quốc gia tại Đại học Quốc gia Úc, giải thích cách nông nghiệp gia cầm hiện thời có nguy cơ bội phần về sự biến đổi của vi khuẩn. Trong thời kỳ này khi chúng ta có những nông trại gia cầm rộng lớn, thí dụ nơi gà mái ở gần sát bên nhau và có thể lây nhiễm dễ dàng từ con này đến con khác, chúng ta có một hũ tiềm năng tan chảy chứa vi khuẩn truyền nhiễm đang phát sinh. Thêm nhiều quốc gia báo cáo về các biến thái cúm heo có tiềm năng giết hại.

Các cơ quan Trung quốc đã xác định 8 ca biến thái, gây thêm lo lắng cho các khoa học gia về chứng bệnh có thể sớm phát triển thành một thể dạng hung dữ và nguy hiểm hơn.

Tiến sĩ Zhong Nanshan, Giám đốc của Viện Bệnh Hô hấp Guangzhou ở Trung quốc giải thích rằng nguy cơ của quốc gia đối với một biến thái giết người do một phối hợp của cúm heo H1N1 và cúm gà H5N1 cực kỳ cao độ bởi vì khuẩn cúm gà xảy ra nhiều trong quốc gia khá lâu.

Trong khi đó, các viên chức của Tổ chức Y tế Thế giới đang lưu ý đến các tường trình từ các quốc gia như Na Uy, nơi một khuẩn cúm heo khác có liên quan đến 2 vụ chết người và một chứng bệnh trầm trọng với lây nhiễm mô đường hô hấp sâu hơn được báo cáo. Theo Tổ chức Y tế Thế giới, cùng loại biến thái này đã được phát hiện trong các ca, một số gây chết người ở Pháp Ba Tây, Ukraine, Hoa Kỳ, Nhật, và Mễ Tây Cơ. Cúm heo được ghi nhận là đại dịch truyền nhiễm nhanh nhất cho đến nay, nhiều hơn là có thể được kiểm tính. Dựa trên các ước tính, Iran gần đây tường trình hơn 1 triệu lây nhiễm, và Pháp hiện nay báo cáo hơn 2 triệu. Số tử vong vì cúm heo cũng tiếp tục gia tăng, bao gồm 404 tử vong mới được loan báo ở Ukraine bao gồm các ca viêm phổi, 566 ở Ấn Độ, 279 ở Gia Nã Đại, 104 ở Nam Hàn, 16 ở Nga, 17 ở Serbia, 14 ở Jordan, và 16 ở Portugal. Trung quốc có 51 tử vong cúm heo nội trong tuần vừa qua, cho một tổng số tử vong chính thức là 104. Số tử vong trên thế giới tường trình bởi Trung tâm Phòng và Ngừa Bệnh Âu châu đã vượt qua 8.452, mặc dù con số đúng nhất cũng được công nhận là hoàn toàn thấp trong việc đánh giá.

Số tử vong vì cúm heo nhảy vọt ít nhất một ngàn trong tuần vừa qua - 30 tháng 11, 2009

Với Trung tâm Phòng ngừa và Kiểm soát Bệnh tật Âu Châu ghi nhận tổng số chính thức là 8.452 tử vong vì cúm heo trên khắp toàn cầu, Tổ chức Y tế Quốc tế tuyên bố rằng số người chết tăng gia lên 1.000 nội tuần vừa qua thôi. Cả hai tổ chức trên công nhận rằng những số được báo cáo này chỉ đại biểu một phần nhỏ của tổng số thật sự.

Trong khi đó, nhiều quốc gia tường trình con số người chết tiếp tục leo thang, bao gồm 17 tử vong mới, nội trong một tuần ở Tây Ban Nha. Mạng sống thứ năm bị mất tại chuyến hành hương Hajj được báo cáo ở Ả Rập Saudi, khi số tử vong tại Gia Nã Đại leo thang lên gần 10% chỉ trong vài ngày, tới tổng số là 309, và những viên chức ở Alberta báo động một cơn sóng đại dịch thứ ba rất có thể xảy ra.

Sự phát triển nhanh chóng các bệnh lây nhiễm khó trị ở Hoa Kỳ được tin là phát xuất từ ngành chăn nuôi - 2 tháng 12, 2009

Một tường trình ấn hành trong phiên bản mới của “Bệnh Truyền nhiễm Nảy sinh” ở Hoa Kỳ phát hiện rằng các ca Staphylococcus aureus kháng Methicillin phát sinh từ cộng đồng đã phát triển hơn 90% trong thập niên qua.

Sự gia tăng đáng ngại này có liên hệ với các lây nhiễm kháng thuốc trong thú vật chăn nuôi bị cho ăn số lượng thuốc kháng sinh khổng lồ để kích thích nhân tạo sự phát triển và chống bệnh thường phát sinh trong điều kiện quá dơ bẩn, đông đúc của chúng. Việc tiếp cận với thú vật dẫn đến số lượng lớn nông dân chăn nuôi, nhân viên và thú y sĩ thử nghiệm dương tính với dòng MRSA.

MRSA, cũng có thể lây nhiễm qua thịt bị nhiễm bệnh, gây nhiều áp se đau đớn vô cùng có thể xâm nhập vào xương và các cơ phận chủ yếu, dẫn đến hậu quả thiệt mạng. Theo tin cập nhật hiện nay, tổng số tử vong cúm heo chính thức trên toàn cầu là 8.651, với việc kiểm tra mọi lây nhiễm có quá nhiều để kiểm tính. Theo kỷ lục được ghi nhận, số tử vong gần đây nhất tăng lên ít nhất là 21 ở Ai Cập, 580 ở Ấn Độ, 4 ở Morocco, 9 ở Tây Ngạn của Palestine, và 13 ở Iraq. Nhà chức trách ở Nam Hàn đã điều tra cái chết của một học sinh qua đời cách đây 4 ngày sau khi nhận chủng ngừa cúm heo, và các viên chức y tế ở đó cũng đã tường trình ca cúm heo kháng thuốc Tamiflu đầu tiên trong cậu bé 5 tuổi.

Thật đáng buồn cho tất cả bệnh nhân bị cúm heo và MRSA. Xin tri ân các khoa học gia cho sự nghiên cứu của quý vị về bệnh truyền nhiễm này. Cúm heo gia tăng cơ hội biến thái với việc lây nhiễm thêm cho thú vật - 4 tháng 12, 2009

Bộ Nông nghiệp Hoa Kỳ tuyên bố rằng một con báo trong sở thú ở California và gà tây ở nông trại gà tây Virginia được thử nghiệm dương tính với cúm heo. Một nhân viên trong nông trại Virginia mắc bệnh cúm heo được tin là đã truyền sang các con gà tây.

Trong khi Bộ Y tế Âu Lạc (Việt Nam) tường trình tử vong thứ 5 từ cúm heo trong năm 2009, các viên chức y tế toàn cầu tiếp tục quan tâm nhiều về tiềm năng kết hợp của cúm gia cầm và cúm heo.

Sự phối hợp này có thể tạo ra tính lây nhiễm và khả năng giết hại cao hơn, một nguy cơ gia tăng khi vi khuẩn truyền qua từ một chủng loại sang một chủng loại khác. Ước tính có khoảng 3.900 tổng số tử vong ở Hoa Kỳ. Trên toàn cầu, số tử vong cúm heo được báo cáo đã lên đến 11.582. Tuy nhiên, các chuyên gia nói con số này chỉ là một phần của con số thật sự. Xin cầu nguyện cho nạn nhân và các gia đình bị ảnh hưởng bởi trận đại dịch kéo dài này.

Cúm heo trầm trọng hơn nữa vẫn tiếp tục đe dọa.

Truyền vi khuẩn từ thú sang người là nguyên nhân hàng đầu không những gây ngộ độc thức ăn, mà còn gây bệnh cúm như là cúm heo nữa, với vi khuẩn bệnh này biến đổi liên tục, nhất là khi xí nghiệp nuôi thú vẫn còn hiện hữu.

Bác sĩ Trưởng của Anh quốc, Liam Donaldson, nói về nỗi sợ lớn nhất của ông là cúm heo biến đổi vào mùa đông năm nay, rất có thể xảy ra giữa những heo bị bệnh trong trại nuôi. Heo bị nhiễm cúm được khám phá gần đây nhất tại Đức quốc và Anh quốc, cộng thêm vào những ca cũng đã được tìm thấy ở Úc, Gia Nã Đại, Trung Hoa, Phần Lan, Hồng Kông, Nam Dương, Nhật, Băng đảo, Ái Nhĩ Lan, Formosa (Đài Loan) và Hoa Kỳ rồi.

Trong khi đó, những tử vong mới xảy ra cũng được tường trình trên khắp thế giới, đem tổng số tử vong chính thức toàn cầu là 11.717 với một vài tổng số tử vong quốc gia là 32 ở Formosa (Đài Loan), 24 ở Ai Cập, 243 ở Thổ Nhĩ Kỳ, 9 ở Slovenia, 606 ở Ấn Độ, 200 ở Trung Hoa, 66 ở Do Thái và 113 người chết ở Nam Hàn. Cả hai, số tử vong chính thức và các ca bị bệnh, được xem là định giá vô cùng thấp so với số nhiễm cúm heo thường xuyên xảy ra thật sự.

Chúng tôi chân thành cầu nguyện cho mọi nạn nhân bị bệnh cúm heo, và sự tiếp tục của bệnh này không thể nào chịu nổi nữa. Mong tất cả bệnh phát xuất từ việc sản xuất thịt chấm dứt ngay bây giờ, thay vào đó chúng ta làm đầy dĩa ăn với thực phẩm toàn thực vật lành mạnh, tối quan trọng.

Nations come to neighbors’ aid amidst still-escalating pandemic - 10 Dec 2009

Fear has spread throughout Gaza, Palestine as the first 12 swine flu deaths occurred, including the loss of a well-known surgeon. To help the region cope with the outbreak, Israeli officials have made arrangements to transfer at least five seriously ill Palestinian swine flu victims to regional hospitals for treatment.

Meanwhile, after North Korea reported 7 swine flu fatalities and closed schools a month early to slow the viral spread, South Korean President Lee Myung-bak requested that medical aid be sent unconditionally to the country.

Although the world’s swine flu cases, both fatal and mild, are far more in number than officially recorded, government agencies have reported at least 12,054 lost lives since April 2009.

The total death toll in Israel has now reached 67, and in Turkey, confirmed swine flu deaths rose by 55 in just 3 days to a sum of 296. Meanwhile, the Netherlands has reported the third fatality due to a mutated form of the swine flu virus, while 42 people so far have died of the original virus.

Concern still runs high about the ongoing risk of swine flu combining with other viral diseases at large, such as bird flu. In Ireland, nearly 500 people have experienced severe adverse reactions to the swine flu vaccine, which involves the brutally inhumane treatment of monkeys and chickens in its production.

Mutation has strengthened swine flu’s grip on humans - 12 Dec 2009

Molecular biologists at the US Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences have released the results of a new study in which they found a new mutation on one of the genes of the virus causing the current (A) H1N1 swine flu pandemic.

Unlike previous pandemics, the current swine flu virus appears to suppress human cells’ ability to halt a certain flu virus gene from activating. US researchers were shocked at the revelation, with Dr. Jennifer Doudna of University of California, Berkeley stating, “This is an extremely rare mutation and a rare combination,
which suggests that there may be other ways that haven't emerged yet that these viruses are going to continue to evolve.”

Around the world, swine flu has claimed the lives of at least 12,538 people according to official reports, while in actuality, the death toll and total cases are occurring at far higher rates.

Fatalities from swine flu grew to 35 in Egypt, and more than doubled in the last week in the Czech Republic, rising from 11 to 27. Our appreciation Dr. Doudna and colleagues for your revealing research on the potentially more lethal structure of the current swine flu.

Swine flu deaths climb to 10,000 in the US - 14 Dec 2009

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, swine flu fatalities in mid-November reached about 10,000, a significant jump from the previous month’s estimate of 3,900.

In addition, the lives lost included more than 1,000 children and 7,500 younger adults, the two hardest hit age groups in the United States. In sum, at least 50 million, or 1 in 6, Americans have been infected. Swine flu has also been fast rising in France, and in the Netherlands, the number of people who perished due to a Tamiflu-resistant mutation of the swine flu virus doubled to 11 within the past week.

Meanwhile, India’s death toll rose to 699, Egypt 44, 137 in Italy, and 283 in the UK. The total estimated tally of fatalities is at least 18,638, although actual figures of these and swine flu cases are deemed much higher.
Health officials in the US have found that in the fatal cases, the virus had attacked deep within the lungs, in a phenomenon similar to that of the 1918 flu pandemic that killed 100 million people worldwide.

Safety standards of school lunch meats in question - 16 Dec 2009

The internationally distributed daily newspaper, USA Today, recently published articles investigating the meat served to tens of millions of American children in school lunch programs. In the case of beef, the survey found that hamburger meat purchased for school lunch programs allows up to 10 times the amount of the deadly generic E. coli as does one fast food chain.

In the case of chicken, school lunches serve thousands of tons of meat from so-called “spent hens” of the egg-laying industry. These laying hens, who had been restricted to tiny filthy cages, often have infections at the time they are killed as well as osteoporosis with brittle bones that easily splinter and can contaminate the meat.

Each year in the US alone, tens of millions of people are sickened, and up to 9,000 die due to food poisoning caused primarily by bacteria such as E. coli, Campylobacter, and Listeria.

These animal-borne infections came to be known with the rise of industrial-scale livestock farms. The swine flu virus is also a product of these horrendously filthy, crowded facilities, and like food-borne bacteria, has killed many children.

In a swine flu update, an estimated 19,104 people have died worldwide. This total represents only a fraction of the tally if all actual occurrences could be tracked. Official national death tolls continue to climb, including India with 730 lost lives, Ukraine with 496, Formosa (Taiwan) with 35, and China with 373 who have perished.

Our sympathies to the loved ones of all victims of swine flu and other meat-related diseases. We thank USA Today and other officials who are looking into the important issue of safety standards for school lunches. May we tolerate such risks to our children’s health no longer, and instead ensure their highest vitality through vegan-only fare.

Swine flu fatalities continue to mount - 18 Dec 2009

The swine flu death toll is still climbing globally, having officially reached 19,711 in about 200 countries. However, this number reflects just a fraction of actual victims. For instance, physicians in Uzbekistan have estimated several hundred people may have died due to swine flu, although official records are not being kept.

Similarly, in the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stated that updated estimates of swine flu deaths had climbed to around 10,000, with the number having doubled after a new way of tallying accounted for more states.

According to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, 70 percent of fatalities in Europe occur along with underlying chronic illnesses. Among the countries with most recent deaths, Poland reported an increase to 73, 69 in Israel, and Turkey announced 415 after 62 new patients, including 27 pregnant women, succumbed to the virus.

Swine flu pandemic far from over - 20 Dec 2009

In a press conference on Thursday, World Health Organization (WHO) Special Advisor to the Director-General on Pandemic Influenza Dr. Keiji Fukuda stated that the H1N1 swine flu pandemic is likely to continue to circulate for a number of years.

He explained that there are still high levels of viral activity in European and central Asian countries such as Russia, France, Switzerland, Czech Republic and Kyrgyzstan. In some regions such as North America and some parts of Europe, swine flu activity appears to have passed peak activity. However, Dr. Fukuda stated that this is no reason to lower caution.

Dr. Keiji Fukuda – World Health Organization Special Adviser to the Director-General on Pandemic Influenza (M): One of the big questions which is still before us is whether we expect to see yet another wave of activity occur or perhaps at late winter or in the early spring months and the answer right now is that we simply are not able to answer this question.

VOICE: To date, at least 19,839 swine flu deaths have been officially recorded worldwide since April 2009, although the WHO states that actual cases, including those resulting in fatalities, are hugely underestimated. Deaths recently rose to 50 in Âu Lạc (Vietnam) and 119 in Germany. In a one-week period, 25 lives were lost in Canada, and 116 people perished in China, where the total reported toll is 442.

Dr. Fukuda, World Health Organization and all others working to inform and assist those in need, we appreciate your efforts as we also send our condolences and prayers to all the families who have been afflicted by this disease.

Potential second wave of mad cow disease joins swine flu in fatal animal-borne diseases - 22 Dec 2009

In the United Kingdom, the medical journal Lancet reports new findings that Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, the human form of mad cow disease, is more prevalent among the general population than previously thought.

In January 2009, a 30-year-old man perished, like all victims of this tragically untreatable condition that is transmitted largely through contaminated meat consumption.

However, analysis of his genetic makeup found that it was distinct from that of the other Britons who had perished thus far from the disease. In fact, the researchers found that nearly half the population who were previously thought to be immune could in fact be vulnerable to the deadly affliction and might just be taking longer to exhibit symptoms.

This could mean that a second wave of the lethal illness is still to come.

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease originally arose from the farmed animal practice of feeding dead animals to cows. Influenza viruses like the current swine flu pandemic also originated from unnatural and cruel treatment of livestock, namely the concentrated confining of thousands of pigs together in cramped, filthy conditions.

To date, at least 20,002 people have been officially reported as having lost their lives to swine flu since April 2009, though actual numbers are many times higher. Updated death tolls include 47 in Costa Rica, 86 in Egypt and up to 539 in Ukraine.

In India, where several hundred new cases are recorded daily, total fatalities are now surpassing 789, as 12 people died on Saturday, December 19 alone. It saddens us to know of these ailments, which persistently plague humankind once they emerge.

Swine flu vaccine still causing concern – 24 Dec 2009

In a recent poll by the Harvard School of Public Health in the US, 35% of parents responded that they would not have their children vaccinated against the swine flu, the majority citing fear of side effects as the reason. Similarly, in Australia, where 191 have perished out of 47,000 total confirmed cases, 65% stated similarly that they did not intend to get the swine flu vaccine.

Death tolls from the virus have risen in the past few days in countries such as India with now 792 deaths, Iran with 147, 36 in Algeria, 49 in Hong Kong and Israel with 72 lost lives. Since April 2009, swine flu deaths worldwide have officially reached 20,083, with the World Health Organization stating that the actual mortality rate is “unquestionably higher,” especially since the cost of testing means that most swine flu cases go uncounted in less developed nations.

Meanwhile, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 47 million Americans have been infected with the H1N1 virus, with nearly 10,000 who have died and more than 200,000 hospitalized.

In China, health officials are concerned about travel associated with the upcoming Lunar New Year festivities, which could worsen the swine flu’s spread. Globally, young children and people with existing health conditions such as asthma and diabetes remain significantly more vulnerable to severe illness and death.

Swine flu vaccine still raising concern over side effects – 30 Dec 2009

In Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, parents have avoided having their children receive swine flu vaccinations due to fear of adverse effects previously linked with the inoculation such as illness, autism and even death.

A recent survey in the United States found that one-third of parents have similarly wary responses, despite a recent increase in the vaccine’s availability. The swine flu vaccine is known to contain ingredients from chicken eggs obtained through cruel intensive breeding and confinement, or monkey kidneys extracted after infecting and killing the animals.

Canadian health officials were recently asked by a major vaccine producer to set aside a batch of vaccines that were found to trigger much higher rates of a dangerously severe allergic reaction called anaphylaxis.

Meanwhile, South Korea has seen at least 292 reports of side effects following vaccines, including 4 potentially linked fatalities.

In Formosa (Taiwan), the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported that four people perished after receiving a flu shot, including a 7-year-old healthy boy who deteriorated starting the day after his inoculation, until succumbing just over a month later to extreme autoimmune disorder. The island’s CDC also recorded 331 complaints of milder effects, such as dizziness, fever, headache, and vomiting. In response to the public’s concern, the Formosan (Taiwanese) Department of Health is now considering an increase in the level of financial compensation to victims of the swine flu vaccine’s ill effects.

In official records alone, death tolls climbed to 6 in Pakistan, 10 in Georgia, 29 in Romania, 42 in Algeria, 115 in Egypt, and 625 in Ukraine, while Nepal confirmed her first 2 swine flu fatalitiesy. Within a 67-day period, 578 fatalities were confirmed globally, including 145 in Europe, 179 in North America, and 197 in Asia. The current official global death toll is 20,616, although actual cases are said to be far too many to be counted.

Swine flu havoc to continue in new year.

On Tuesday, December 29, Director-General Margaret Chan of the World Health Organization (WHO) stated that the swine flu pandemic has not yet peaked worldwide. Explaining that influenza viruses by nature are unpredictable and capable of changing into more severe forms, Dr. Chan also emphasized that the world is not ready to cope with a pandemic of the bird flu virus, which lately has been re-emerging to attack in several countries.

Meanwhile, experts continue to warn of the potential for a recombining of swine and bird flu DNA, with the likely “mixing vessels” for this more lethal version being pigs bred in filthy, disease-____e factory farms.

Recently, confirmed swine flu fatalities rose to 53 in Âu Lạc (Vietnam), 52 in Serbia, 49 in Hungary, 124 in Saudi Arabia, 150 in Nepal and 898 in India.

Official tallies, which now total 20,810, are known to be a fraction of the actual death tolls as countless cases go unreported.

Swine flu vaccine threatens shark species.

Deepwater sharks at risk of extinction have been fished en masse to produce a key ingredient in the swine flu vaccine known as squalene. Squalene is naturally found in plant alternatives such as olive oil.

However, the methods used to harvest the squalene oil from shark liver include not only killing the sharks but also other marine life through the destructive practice of bottom trawling. According to Ms. Mary O’Malley, co-founder of the US-based Shark Safe Network, these fish are more vulnerable to extinction due to their slow reproduction rates combined with disregard for measures implemented in places like the European Union to limit shark fishing.

Although a number of regions’ swine flu waves appear to have subsided, many countries are still seeing high levels of activity, including Bulgaria, Switzerland, and parts of central Asia such as Kazakhstan.

In all, 20,810 fatalities have been reported globally so far due to the pandemic, although the vast majority of cases have gone untested and therefore uncounted. Countries seeing increased deaths include Egypt with 133 lives lost, 919 in India, 70 in Greece, and 410 in Canada.

Experts review swine flu’s continued toll.

In the United States, where a sudden jump in rates of viral activity and fatalities has been observed, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stated that five times as many children have perished due to the pandemic compared to the regular seasonal flu, with total deaths estimated at 10,000.

A comparison in the United Kingdom of the swine flu to other pandemics concluded that a disproportionate number of native populations, as well as otherwise healthy expectant women and children have been affected, with the average patient’s age being just 15. Moreover, world health officials caution that a third wave could come later this winter or early spring.

Currently, swine flu-related deaths number 20,810 as reported by world governments across the globe, although actual figures are much higher. India now has 974 fatal cases, Algeria 47, and in China 648 people have perished as the country cautions officials of a possible surge in infections during the crowded Lunar New Year holidays later in January and early February 2010.

Our prayers for the victims of these long-drawn afflictions and the loved ones of those lost to swine flu. Let us do what is best to protect ourselves and others by addressing the dangers of animal agriculture-borne disease through the safe and humane refuge of organic vegan foods.

Antibiotic-resistant bacterial DNA on the rise in soil - 7 Jan 2010

A comprehensive study by Dutch and British scientists has revealed that bacterial strains resistant to antibiotic treatment are on the rise in the Netherlands. The scientists looked at soil samples collected between 1940 and 2008 from five sites around the country and found that 78% of the bacterial genes were resistant
to four different classes of antibiotics.

Research lead, Professor David Graham of Newcastle University in the United Kingdom, said he expected that other countries would have similar results and called for additional testing.

In the Netherlands, where medication-resistant MRSA strains are already a known medical issue, veterinarians and farmers are considered to pose more serious infection risks and are immediately isolated when hospitalized because of their constant exposure to the potent germs carried by intensely confined animals.
Recently, both Dutch and US legislators have been considering bans on routine and excessive antibiotics fed to farmed animals. Besides antibiotic abuse, other widespread livestock practices pose constant public health dangers, such as the crowded and filthy factory-style farming of pigs that spawned the swine flu.

In countries with updated infection data, Kuwait has recorded 26 swine flu deaths, Algeria 47, Egypt 159, Israel 80, China 659, and India announced her death toll to have passed 1,000. While representing just a fraction of actual human losses, the global total of confirmed fatalities stands at 21,164. Our prayers for all infected by swine flu as well as other by-product diseases of animal raising.

We are alarmed to hear about the growing threat to public health presented by dangerous, antibiotic-resistant bacteria. May governments promote solutions that go to the root cause by eliminating factory farms and supporting instead the humane and lifesaving organic vegan diet.

Livestock-related diseases continue to emerge - 9 Jan 2010

In South Korea,an outbreak of the highly contagious foot-and-mouth disease was recently detected in a herd of cattle, with officials saying that 346 cows, 1,500 pigs, and other farmed animals will be killed to stop the contamination.

All exports of beef and pork products have also been temporarily halted. Meanwhile, poultry and egg products from Texas, USA were banned by Japan after a flock of ducks was found to be possibly contaminated with avian flu.

The deadly avian, or bird flu epidemic has caused at least 282 human and countless poultry fatalities on farms since 2003, with a 60% human mortality rate. New reports show that in 2009, Indonesia, the hardest hit country, recorded 20 additional bird flu cases, of which 19 were fatal, bringing the nation’s total avian flu deaths to 134, while Egypt, China, Cambodia, and Âu Lạc (Vietnam) were also afflicted in 2009.

According to some experts, the sudden rise in bird flu-caused illnesses and deaths is correlated with the industrialization of chicken farms.
Since April 2009, the risk has significantly increased that a new hybrid strain combining the lethal bird flu and the rapidly spreading swine flu pandemic could appear to further threaten human health.

In a swine flu update, there have now been 1,046 official fatalities in India, 172 in Egypt, 66 in Romania, 55 in Hong Kong, 192 in Thailand and 648 in China. While government records reflect only a very small fraction of actual cases and deaths, the current global total fatalities is 21,473.

We join in sorrow for the world’s citizens affected by these animal-related diseases and pray for them to subside. May we each contribute to the prevention of worse unstoppable ailments by adopting safer, healthful lifestyles, the best being the organic vegan diet.

Mass meat production sickens more with E. coli. - 11 Jan 2010

The deadly E. coli O157:H7 bacteria, which often originates in livestock’s fecal matter, has seen yet another serious occurrence in the United States. Some 124 tons of beef were recalled over the Christmas holidays from both stores and popular restaurant chains as at least 21 people fell ill across 16 states.

Of those sickened, 9 were hospitalized, and one has been diagnosed with the potentially lethal kidney disorder known as hemolytic uremic syndrome. According to leading US food safety attorney Bill Marler, such livestock-related infections have become alarmingly more common,with factory farming and lack of regulations being major factors.

In a telephone interview, Mr. Marler explained how the bacteria could make its wayto one’s plate.
Bill Marler – Food-borne illness lawyer, USA (M): There have been a number of Salmonella and Campylobacter-related outbreaks at buffets where the chicken might get under-cooked or again might become crossed-contaminated with other food items in the buffet. And they do happen fairly frequently.

VOICE: In the December E. coli outbreak, half the afflicted were under the age of 34. Indeed, all too many food poisoning victims are children.

Bill Marler (M): In Wales, there was a young boy who had died from an E. coli infection at school lunch, and it was really because the butcher had cross-contaminated a cutting board with cooked meat and raw meat, and so cooked meat went out and poisoned this kid. So it’s been a long haul for me seeing a lot of really great families devastated by bacterial and viral illnesses, not only E. coli but Salmonella, Listeria, Campylobacter.

VOICE: Another lethal disease originating from mass animal agriculture is the H1N1 swine flu pandemic, known to have infected millions globally thus far. Fatalities have risen most recently in countries such as Ukraine with 882 recorded lives lost, India with 1,061, Canada with 414, and Algeria now with 54 deaths.

Confirmed swine flu fatalities across more than 200 countries stands at 21,473. However, as is the case with food-borne bacteria cases, actual occurrences, both fatal and non-fatal, go vastly underreported.

We thank Mr. Marler for further revealing the tragedy of today’s agriculture practices and pray for the countless victims and families affected by diseases with meat production at their root.

Animal mistreatment’s link to food-borne disease

With the current swine flu mortality counts climbing now to 195 in Egypt, 82 in Romania, 85 in Israel, 265 in France, and 355 in the United Kingdom, death tolls globally total at least 21,547, although actual cases and fatalities far exceed the ones confirmed. Meanwhile, a critically ill patient in Australia perished after being stricken with the country’s first case of antiviral-resistant swine flu.

As experts worldwide anxiously brace for a third wave of the pandemic, the question has been raised once more about the factors that cause such new contagions to emerge – namely the unimaginable filth and immobilizing, crowded, stressful conditions of modern animal farms. This and other aspects of the animals’ cruel treatment inevitably result in the development of bacterial infections and viral diseases such as the swine flu.

Although some countries attempt to ensure the welfare of farmed animals through inspections, experts such as Dr. Gary Steiner, a philosophy professor in the US whose animal ethics findings were highlighted recently in The New York Times, state that these practices could never justify the killing and consuming of animals in the first place.

Dr. Gary Steiner – Philosophy Professor, Vegan (M): If it's the case that most people don't need to eat or to use animals in order to lead a perfectly healthy lifestyle, let alone to survive, then there's no justification for inflicting the terrible harms like factory farming.

Through extensive historical research, Dr. Steiner found that traditional Western cultures have believed animals to be morally inferior to humans because they seem to lack rational abilities and intelligence.

Dr. Gary Steiner (M): The fact that there are people out there who are smarter than me doesn't mean that they're morally superior to me. And by the same token, the supposed fact that I'm somehow smarter than my cat, Pindar, has nothing to do with whether I have a right to use him or treat him like a toy or own him as property or anything like that. If we could agree that sentience, rather than cognitive ability, is really what's important as a criterion and for moral status, then I don't think there's any way that somebody could say that objectively my life matters more than Pindar’s. His life matters infinitely to him and mine matters infinitely to me.

And there's no getting outside of those two subjective standpoints for deciding how much one's life matters. So from square one, I think the first thing that we have is an obligation not to harm animals, not to exercise violence upon them. And the most straightforward way is to become vegan and to stay vegan.

The animal and human toll of livestock raising - 15 Jan 2010

According to the specified standards of organically raised livestock, animals are meant to live a happy, healthy life with a swift and humane death. However, the British animal welfare organization Animal Aid released video footage in December 2009 revealing cruel behavior toward the livestock in an organic meat abattoir in Devon and leading to worker suspension.

Now, legal action may ensue, as more recently released details reported by Danny Penman in the UK-based The Daily Mail state that the slaughterhouse workers routinely violated rules set by the British organic certifying group, Soil Association, as well as the nation’s animal welfare regulations. For instance, repeated kicking and beating of the animals was common.

In addition, workers ignored laws intended to spare suffering for the animals as they stunned the pigs and sheep with electric tongs or bolt guns but then left them to regain consciousness before slitting their throats. Thus, many were seen frantically writhing upon being stabbed and bled. This brutal treatment and suffering caused by abattoir conditions, along with the confinement and crowding of thousands of pigs in thesordid, foul conditions of factory farms, has spawned a different kind of suffering in the form of the swine flu pandemic.

While actual death tolls are many times higher than reported, according to global statistics, the animal-borne virus has claimed 21,734 lives. In specific countries, Thailand’s swine flu death toll has risen to 196 and Egypt’s to 201. Romania saw 7 new deaths within 2 days for a total of 92, and 18 more people perished in India as fatalities have now reached 1,098.

Our prayers for the swine flu victims and their families as we sorrow for the abuse of countless animals. We appreciate Animal Aid, journalist Danny Penman and The Daily Mail for their efforts to help raise awareness of the origin of meat products. May we all avoid the interrelated suffering of humans and animals by turning to the life-protecting organic vegan fare.

Bird and swine flu continue their dangerous mixing across species - 17 Jan 2010

On a farm in West Bengal, India, two chickens were just confirmed to have died of the H5N1 avian flu. While tests are still pending on another case, it is likely that the same pathogen killed 2,000 poultry and other birds that were recently discovered lifeless in a village in the same region. The highly lethal avian flu is passed to humans from contact with sickened birds or ingestion of their meat.

Meanwhile, the similarly animal-borne swine flu just saw another outbreak among thousands of pigs in Denmark and is believed to have been transmitted from humans. Medical experts have expressed concern that continued viral exchanges as these are bound to lead to new, more lethal mutations.

In a swine flu update, death tolls have risen to 21 in Georgia, 77 in the Czech Republic, 41 in Finland, and 93 in Greece. India and Egypt, with 1,116 and 214 fatalities respectively, have been reporting continual rises in their death tolls daily. Within a one-week period in January, mainland China recorded 2,183 newly confirmed cases and 51 deaths, with fatalities that now total more than 700. In still other countries, swine flu cases and even deaths go largely unrecorded, with the 21,921 people reported to have perished worldwide considered a severe underestimate.

With our condolences for the lives lost, we pray that those afflicted by ailments like the swine and bird flu recover and that such livestock-related illnesses come to an end. Let us hasten that goal by changing to an organic vegan society, in which both humans and animal co-inhabitants are graced with natural and healthy lives.

Anthrax linked to meat consumption and contact with animal products - 19 Jan 2010

In the United States, a woman was one of three people who recently became severely ill with gastrointestinal anthrax that may have come from drums made of animal hide, which released anthrax spores into the air.

A bacteria usually harbored in the soil, anthrax often kills the livestock that ingest it and can be lethal to humans making contact with infected animal parts such as the hide or consuming infected meat.

In Zimbabwe, regular anthrax outbreaks have made it a highly feared livestock disease. In 11 separate events over the past several months alone, one person and 76 farmed animals have perished due to anthrax poisoning.

Another lethal disease related to cruel and foul conditions of livestock raising is the pandemic swine flu. According to the World Health Organization, the H1N1 virus is still far-reaching and continues to spread in such North African countries as Algeria, Egypt and Morocco, as well as Romania, Ukraine, and Switzerland in Europe, and throughout South Asia including Nepal and Sri Lanka.

With the highest rate of fatalities coming from the Americas and Europe, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has updated its swine flu estimates, stating that as many as 80 million people have been infected with up to 16,460 fatalities in the nation.

This represents an increase from the previous estimate of 10,000. Although the actual death toll is much higher, the number of people who have perished globally based on government reports is now estimated to be 28,381.

Countries brace for third swine flu wave and more -21 Jan 2010

As Nigeria reported her first swine flu death, fatalities from the infection reached 1,141 in India, 198 in Thailand, 23 in Georgia, 224 in Egypt, 714 in China, with a global death toll of approximately 28,510, based on updated figures.

However, the actual tally of swine flu cases is far higher than such limited counts describe. Meanwhile, as the World Health Organization (WHO) cautioned that the pandemic may surge again, health officials in Formosa (Taiwan) warned that a third swine flu outbreak could strike as early as February.

Within a one-week period, Thailand hospitals saw a 5% rise in swine flu infections among all flu patients. In the United Kingdom, flu expert Professor Hugh Pennington predicted that while an imminent third wave is possible, it is more likely that the swine flu virus will reemerge along with seasonal flu in each global hemisphere.

We sorrow for the families new and old who have lost loved ones due to this affliction, a form of animal-borne disease that could be greatly prevented through a shift away from farming animals.

Risk runs high for the next animal-borne pandemic - 23 Jan 2010

Considering that at least 60% of newly emerged infections are transmitted from an animal host, it is only a matter of time before another human illness emerges from a livestock swine flu mutation or perhaps the even deadlier avian virus in poultry birds.

Professor Niels Becker, Director of the National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health at Australian National University explained in a telephone interview with Supreme Master Television.

Prof. Niels Becker – Director of the National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health, Australian National University (M): Over the last 60 years over 350 newly emerged infections have occurred.

This particular pandemic strain is obviously one that did take off. HIV is one that took off. And most of the time, the host is some sort of animal host.

VOICE: Pigs and birds, in particular, have similar receptors to viruses as humans, which has made swine flu and bird flu transferable from animals to humans in the past. Professor Becker explained how modern poultry farms multiply the risk of viral changes.

Prof. Niels Becker (M): These caged animals where birds are right next to each other all the time provide an enormous incubator of infections. And huge numbers of viruses will be produced, and that is more likely to lead to a mutation.

VOICE: Based on official reports of the swine flu pandemic, which experts have acknowledged are a severe underestimate, the latest global death toll is 28,510 and counting.

Even “organic” pigs subjected to cruel lives - 25 Jan 2010
A recent joint investigation by animal welfare groups Compassion in World Farming and the European Coalition for Farm Animals found that most of the 250 million pigs farmed for meat each year in the European Union are raised in illegal conditions.

Violations of a pig welfare law passed in 2003 include ignoring the ban on cutting off tails and depriving basic natural behaviors by denying straw bedding and other materials.

Worse still, US-based Farm Sanctuary reveals that labels such as “humane,” “free range,” “free roaming,” “grass fed” and “organic” mislead the public into believing animals raised with these certifications are treated humanely.

The group’s “Truth Behind the Labels” report reveals that “naturally raised” meat and eggs deemed “cage-free” may in fact come from animals confined by the thousands in large warehouse-like barns, wallowing in their own feces.

The “Certified Humane” program, for example, does not require that pigs or chickens be allowed access to the outdoors; feedlot confinement of beef cattle is allowed, and cruel physical mutilations such as hen debeaking and tail docking are allowed in some circumstances.

Such deplorably inhumane, filthy and crowded conditions are the very kind that have been breeding pathogens such as the swine flu virus. Today, cases continue to spread, with a global death toll reported to be more than 28,510, although experts have acknowledged that both the cases and the fatalities are too numerous to confirm even a fraction of the true total.

The European Union continues to experience increasing cases, especially in such countries as Austria, Bulgaria, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Romania. In addition, Canada recently reported 5 more swine flu fatalities in one week bringing the total to 425, with India announcing 7 in one day for a total of 1,177, and the UK recording three more deaths with at least 66 new hospitalizations in the past week. We thank the Farm Sanctuary, Compassion in World Farming and the European Coalition for Farm Animals for raising awareness of the unfathomable suffering endured by animals for the human palate.

Our prayers for the world’s people who have been afflicted with livestock-related ailments, and that the next disease may be prevented through the halt of all meat production in favor of the truly humane organic vegan lifestyle.

Drug given to pigs raises questions for human health - 27 Jan

To prevent male pigs from releasing a hormone that is said to adversely affect the taste of the meat, farms widely castrate male piglets physically, very often without anesthetics.

As an alternative method, a synthetic chemical vaccine that causes a similar hormonal effect has now been legally permitted in the UK, along with 53 other countries where it is already in use.

This chemical injection prevents puberty while making male pigs gain more weight. However, concerns have been raised regarding its effect on human health and the environment, especially since scientific studies have already linked hormones and other artificially introduced substances in meat to diseases such as cancer.

The British Assured Food Standards agency has rejected the vaccine based on anticipated consumer safety concerns following the 2008 introduction of what was later discovered to be the dangerous synthetic chemical dioxin.

From the widespread use of chemical antibiotics and hormones, to the animals’ utterly foul and confined spaces, livestock farming poses risks to public health in ways we have only recently begun to understand.

These include the origination of such viruses as the H1N1 swine flu. The most recent global death toll from this pandemic is calculated to be more than 28,510, a rise of several thousand since one week ago.

However, both infections and fatal cases are known to be many times higher due to the number that go completely uncounted. In Egypt, official swine flu fatalities just rose by another 4 to 244, while Ukraine reported that flu-like illnesses have cost 1,019 lives.

We send our sorrowful condolences to the loved ones of swine flu’s latest victims. May all such animal-borne afflictions soon subside as we choose only cruelty-free organic vegan fare to nourish and ensure the vitality of all.
