A Lebanese town begins the transition to solar power - 16 Apr 2011
The residents of Arab Salim in southern Lebanon have approved a plan to bring solar water heaters into every home, beginning with a pilot project of 100 homes.
Both the municipal government and the company installing the solar water heaters have agreed to each pay US$100 of the installation expenses.
The cost per household will then be approximately US$400. The equipment should pay for itself in under two years with the average annual savings estimated at US$260 per household.
Congratulations, Arab Salim residents and government, on taking this eco-friendly and cost-saving step. May every city and town adopt Earth-loving ways for a bright planetary future.

An American architect works to build self-sufficient homes in Haiti - 19 Apr 2011
Mr. Michael Reynolds, founder of Earthship Biotecture in New Mexico, USA, has offered his environmentally friendly design for Haitian people who have been without homes since the devastating January 2010 earthquake.
In Port-au-Prince, with a team including 40 local Haitians aged 4 to 50, Mr. Reynolds constructed an “Earthship” residence out of recycled materials.
The group built the 120-square foot demonstration model with salvaged items such as bottles, tires, and styrofoam from the area. Cement debris was ground up to help make flooring and walls. The structure was created to be earthquake and hurricane resistant and promote low-energy usage.
A heartfelt salute, Mr. Michael Reynolds, for your eco-friendly concepts and dedication to Haitian brethren. Also, our thankfulness, Haitian building team, for your supportive efforts. May all beautiful citizens of your nation be blessed with safe and comfortable homes on a calm and long-lasting Earth.

Industrial designers develop a device to generate power from passing trains - 14 May 2011
Mr. Jiang Qian from China and Mr. Alessandro Leonetti Luparini from Italy have created the T-Box. The invention, which would be installed between railroad ties and be partially underground, captures the wind of passing trains. This causes the turbine in the box to produce electricity.
According to Mr. Jiang and Mr. Luparini, 150 of the T-Boxes could be placed on one kilometer of track for railways or subways. The electricity made could possibly be provided for facilities or underserved areas nearby.
What a fantastic innovation, Mr. Jiang Qian and Mr. Alessandro Leonetti Luparini! May more such advancements help to ensure greener and cleaner energy for all.

Japan creates power-saving semiconductor technology - 25 Jul 2011
Researchers from NEC Corporation, a major multinational firm and producer of information technology, and Tohoku University announced the development of an invention that would halt energy consumption from computers, televisions, and other electronic items when they are in standby mode.
Normally, when electric devices are plugged in, even though they are turned off, they are still receiving a flow of electricity. NEC expects the new technology to reduce power consumption in households by 2%, and in facilities having many computers by about 25%.
Congratulations, NEC Corporation and Tohoku University, on this Earth-friendly advancement.
We look forward to hearing about more such beneficial innovations.
