Boeing won $35 billion tanker contract, Pentagon say
The Air Force awarded its $35 billion air-refueling tanker contract Thursday to Boeing, surprising many defense analysts and bringing both relief and delight to advocates for Washington State.
At a Pentagon press conference, Deputy Secretary of Defense William Lynn said both Boeing and rival contender EADS, parent company of Airbus, satisfied all 372 mandatory performance requirements in their offers.
That left price as the deciding factor, and Lynn said Boeing's bid was cheaper by more than the 1 percent margin required to end the process without taking other factors into account.
"Boeing was a clear winner," said Lynn.
